Thursday - February 22, 2024 - A message from GK Mike Pisano regarding Charity Poker fundraiser...
Gentlemen, there are still plenty of slots available for our next charity poker event on March 14th, 2024 at Vision Lanes in Westland. Charity poker events are the Council's biggest fundraiser and the main reason we can support our charities. Please consider signing up to help out at this important Council event.
This is not difficult work and it's fun to hang out with a couple of your brother Knights for a few hours while doing it. I can help you learn the ropes in just a few minutes and I will be present at each shift and stay as long as necessary for everyone to feel comfortable. Vision Lanes is close by too. The address is 38350 Ford Road in Westland. This is just east of Hix Road on the north side of Ford Road. Again, if at all possible please help us out by clicking on the link below and signing up for a shift. If you have any questions please call or email me. Thank you for your support.

Please patronize Holiday Market when you are able.

Knights In Action
On Monday October 31st Deputy Grand Knight Mike Pisano and Grand Knight Ed Patrick were treated to a tour and ministry discussion at Vista Maria. Vista Maria is an organization that advocates for girls and young women that are human trafficking survivors, foster kids to adoption, have mental health needs, and provides transitional and independent living. They do get grant funding from the State but also rely heavily on donations.
Founded by the Sisters of the Good Shepherd in 1883, they have been helping girls in our communities for over 135 years.
The Council donated $1,000 to Vista Maria to help them with needs for Christmas. If you want to help support them personally watch for a separate email with links to an Amazon and a Target Wish List of items that they need.

Monday - October 3, 2022 - Election Day is coming! - Don't forget to vote on November 8th, or earlier if you prefer the early voting options. Please prayerfully consider voting "NO" on Proposal 3. If this proposal passes, it will enshrine abortion for virtually any reason up to delivery into the Michigan Constitution. It will also eliminate any common sense limits that have been put in place in Michigan over the past 30 years like parental notice for underage abortion seekers. The wording of the proposal is intentionally worded to allow for the broadest interpretation of abortion practices possible. It is not the simple and benign reinstatement of Roe v Wade as is being touted by its supporters. Vote "NO" and let any changes in abortion law in Michigan be enacted by the elected legislature that represent us, not by a well funded pro-abortion lobby ballot petition.
Sunday - October 2, 2022 - Our semi-annual "Tootsie Roll" drive will again occur on Columbus Day weekend, October 7th thru 9th. All net proceeds go to support there Developmentally Disabled community. Please help us next weekend when you see our Knights of Columbus out and about in Canton. Your financial assistance will be most appreciated. And you will be rewarded with a delicious Tootsie Roll!

Wednesday - June 1, 2022 - A message from Grand Knight Ed Patrick...
Brother Knights,
In May, members of the Council stood up and volunteered their time and talent to a very worthwhile Community/Life project. The project was for Mary’s Mantle. Mary’s Mantle is a Pro-Life Catholic home for pregnant young women who are homeless. They are in Southfield, MI.
The story began in April when I was contacted by Mary’s Mantle Executive Director, Katie Montes, for some assistance. A member of our church no longer had need of a large playscape/swing set and wanted to donate it. This was the type of item Mary’s Mantle could utilize at their house, but they had no way or means to get it from Canton to Southfield. Katie reached out to our Council for help.
Brother John Maclean volunteered to lead the project and he immediately got to work planning how to get it done. Several Brothers volunteered for the project. The playscape had to be disassembled, loaded and moved to the Southfield home and then reassembled.
On May 21st the team assembled at the donor’s house and despite delays due to inclement weather (thunderstorms & lighting) they were able to get the playscape taken apart and loaded/packed into the U-Haul box van rented for the occasion. It just fit.
The whole team then headed to the destination in Southfield for the second half of the job.
Since the playscape was not new and had been in the weather for a few years, some of the parts were in dire need of replacement in order for it to be a safe
In need of replacement so it would be safe for the kids to play on. All the supplies needed were procured and the team got to work rebuilding the playscape. It was competed and after some testing deemed ready for the kids.
This was a great example of charity for our Council and I want to thank all of the volunteers that made it happen:

Tuesday - November 16, 2021 - A message from Grand Knight, Ed Patrick...
Brothers - Last week the Golf Outing Chairmen and myself met with Steve at Open Door Ministries and delivered a check for $2,455.00. The check will be used to purchase food needed to round out the donations they receive and then distribute to the needy in our community. Providing this cash to them has a significant multiplier effect. The Ministry buys food for about ten cents on the dollar of value. That multiplier effect will enable them to purchase $24,000 worth of food from our donation. The food distributions occur every Thursday from 4-7 PM. I want to pass along a big thank you from Open Door Ministries to everyone who helped with the golf outing and of course to all the players that made the donation possible.

Friday - September 3, 2021 - Joe Nader has passed away...
It is with great sadness I am reporting that our Brother Knight, Joseph Nader, passed away last night. Joe served the Knights in just about every role we have and was always one to help us keep moving forward in the right direction. He and his wife Suzanne were one of the original parish families at St. Thomas a'Becket and he continued to stay active even though his health was failing. Suzanne told me that he is still working on things just in a different place.
Joe was our council's Knight of the Year for Fraternal Year 2012-2013. In the photo below from June 2013 he is receiving his award. He was extremely generous sharing his time and talents in support of our council, not just that year, but virtually every year. He will be greatly missed.
Funeral arrangements will be setup today. There will be a rosary but and I will pass along those details as soon as I have them.
Eternal rest grant unto your servant Joseph, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him.
Vivat Jesus,
Ed Patrick, Grand Knight

Wednesday - April 21, 2021 - Knight of the Month: April 2021 - Ed Patrick has done a remarkable job leading the Retention committee this year. The council started the with 26 members unpaid after the second notice was sent. To date, we have received payment from 22 brothers, leaving us with 2 unpaid. This is a huge accomplishment during these times. Thanks to Ed and the team, their hard work has resulted in a positive financial impact to the council and successful retention of our membership. Congratulations to Ed Patrick as Knight of Month!

Here's our Grand Knight's communication:
Our Knight of the Month for February is PGK Mike Goodhart. This year’s challenges did not slow our PGK’s drive to keep our council active. He continued to lead the annual Keep Christ in Christmas poster contest. The people of the parish responded with eight entries from children of various ages. He championed the program from start to finish, including delivery of the awards to the winners. He also facilitated a new program for our council that inspired the teens of the parish. The Catholic Citizenship Essay Contest took place during the same time as the poster contest. Congratulations to Mike Goodhart!

Sunday - January 31, 2021 - January FAMILY OF THE MONTH announcement from GK Larry Guastella...
In December, we needed additional assistance to facilitate this year’s Consecration to the Holy Family mass celebration. We were fortunate to receive help from our parish Music Ministry family. The director, Kevin Ryan, leveraged his skills to help us electronically distribute the prayer cards that we normally hand out in person, using the parish website and providing a link in the Chancellor. With all the COVID restrictions in place, this was the key piece for us to reach the parishioners and our members.
He also coordinated the publication and awareness of the event through the various media channels at the parish, along with mass announcements to include the entire parish community in the celebration.
We salute Kevin Ryan and the Music Ministry for a very successful event and recognize them as Family of the Month for January 2021!

Monday - January 18, 2021 - A message from Culture of Life Director Bill DesOrmeau to all members of K of C #8284...
Brothers,
Please join your Brother Knights and families in a Novena for Life.
The protection of life is a sustained prayer intention of the Church, and in particular, the Knights of Columbus. Knights remain firmly committed to defending the right to life of every human being – from the moment of conception to natural death. To commemorate and bolster this important cause, our council will join councils throughout the order in a Novena, nine days of sustained prayer, to build up a culture of life in our parishes, homes and wider community.
As Catholics, we know prayer is what strengthens and sustains our efforts to defend the sanctity of life. That’s why this year, councils are encouraged to spiritually support national, state and local Marches for Life across the globe, as well as our Order’s efforts to build a Culture of Life, by participating in 9 Days for Life.
9 Days for Life is a multi-faceted novena offered each year by the bishops of the United States for the respect and protection of every human life. Each day, a different intention is accompanied by a short reflection, suggested actions, and related information.
A special web-page has been created for Knights to participate in this year’s Novena found at kofc.9daysforlife.com. I encourage you to share the page, sign-up for the daily emails, and participate in the novena between Thursday, January 21 – and Friday, January 29, 2021.
Thank you for joining us in praying this Novena.
Vivat Jesus,
Bill DesOrmeau, Culture of Life Director

Brother Knights:
Happy New Year! I hope each of you had a wonderful Christmas. For most, it was probably a very different kind of celebration with all of us making the best of the day in our own way. Hopefully with the vaccine administration underway, we have begun to turn the corner and hope has become even brighter.
This month we continued our good work at a reduced pace. Unfortunately, we were not able to enjoy some our traditional events and activities like Breakfast with Santa and our Council Christmas Dinner. The breakfast is a great activity where the youth run the entire event under supervision of brother Knights from prep to clean up. The Christmas dinner highlights normally include great homemade dishes brought by the families to share. These are always fun events and we look forward to sharing once again in 2021.
On the bright side, we held the annual Keep Christ in Christmas poster contest with several of our parish youth participating. We also held the our first ever Catholic Citizenship Essay contest for the teens of our parish. Both contests produced outstanding entries of creativity. Prizes will be awarded in January. Many thanks to all of you that joined the Fraternal benefits night provided by our Michigan based insurance team. At the end of December, the Consecration to the Holy Family was celebrated at weekend masses. Working closely with Kevin Ryan, we were able to distribute the prayer card for this celebration by including an electronic version as a link in the Chancellor.
I have included a summary of our 2020 events, activities and donations. The list is truly amazing considering that over 75% of the year we have been under various levels of lock down in our state. Thanks to all of you that have participated in, lead and supported the council’s efforts this calendar year. In January we begin a new calendar year for the second half of our fraternal year with a Novena for Life. We will continue to address the challenges we encounter as they arise so that we as Knights remain committed to our pillars of Charity, Fraternity and Unity.
I am pleased to report we are getting closer to our membership requirement for this fraternal year. We are only three new members away from reaching our goal. We do have a great opportunity to achieve Star Council this year. There are only a few items to complete, with membership being the most difficult. Remember, most of the time, just asking someone to join brings in a new member. That someone can be a friend, a neighbor, an uncle, a brother, a parent, a nephew or even a cousin. The requirements are simple, he must be Catholic and at least 18 years old.
Stay safe and healthy.

ANNOUNCEMENT: Kern Council’s Family of the Month – November 2020 - Stef Clewley and Cathy Bammel
The success of this year's coat drive was a result of a unified team lead by Stef Clewley and Cathy Bammel from our St. Thomas a’Becket parish and brother Knights from our council. The common goal to collect as many coats and winter ware as possible, sort them, bag them and deliver them to the designated local charities.
After three weekends of the drive, we collected over 1,100 coats and various other winter type items including gloves, scarves and hats. All of this was made possible by the planning, organizing, hard work and determined execution of Stef and Cathy. This was the second year the council participated with a financial donation as well as numerous volunteer hours.
We as Knights are blessed to have the opportunity to work with the both of you and support such a selfless act of kindness. In recognition of all your countless hours of hard work, we are excited to award you both as November 2020 Family of the Month from the Msgr. Clement H. Kern Knights of Columbus Council 8284. Congratulations Stef and Cathy!

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS - CATHOLIC CITIZENSHIP ESSAY CONTEST
The contest encourages today’s youth to be more connected to their community and their faith. Entrants will be judged on grammar, style, and how clearly they present the theme in a way that showcases creativity, imagination, and overall development of the topic.
In an essay of 500 to 750 words, discuss how trusting in God during a difficult time has helped you or someone you know find the strength and hope to endure it. Consider especially those times when it was a challenge to understand why something was happening. Consider also sharing any lessons about faith and hope you or someone you know may have learned from this experience.
Obtain Entry Forms from Patrick Gauthier, Director of Youth Ministry at St. Thomas a'Becket parish.
Email Patrick at: [email protected]
Essay deadline is December 14, 2020.

The goal of this program is to involve young Catholics in grades 9 to 12 (public, private, parochial, or home schools during the current school year) in civic discourse and instill in them religious and life-affirming values.
Awards will be presented.

We invite you and your family to join brother Knights and fellow Catholics around the world in a Novena for the Cause of Life beginning on Sunday, Oct. 4, and ending on Monday, Oct. 12.
Throughout these nine days, we will pray for an end to abortion, euthanasia and other social ills that result in broken families and unhappiness, and which threaten the most vulnerable. The novena calls upon the intercession of Our Lady and draws upon unique quotes from the teachings of Pope Francis regarding the sanctity of all human life.
Join brother Knights and their families to pray this novena for the defense of life and invite your pastor and fellow parishioners to do the same. By uniting in prayer, we’ll be able to stand up against — and ultimately defeat — threats against life.
A downloadable version of the novena can be found here. You can also sign up to receive a daily email, which will include the unique petitions for each of the nine days of the novena. Click here for details.

Saturday - October 3, 2020 - Sad news...long time member of our council, Paul Pucci, and his wife Sandy, both passed away in late September less than a week apart from each other. Paul was a very active member of the Knights of Columbus (Msgr Kern Council #8284) at St. Thomas a'Becket parish in Canton. He served as an officer for several years and was in change of the 50/50 raffle at the end of each meeting. With his booming voice announcing 50/50, guys just had to buy a ticket! Until fairly recently, Paul would never miss a pre-meeting rosary with his K of C brothers. Many of us will always remember Paul for his jokes and political emails as well. You always knew where Paul stood on things! One picture below is Paul & Sandy attending the Msgr Kern Council Christmas dinner in 2016. The other is Paul receiving The KOM award in May 2017 from GK David Lengel. We will miss them both. Paul & Sandy, may you Rest In Peace in the loving arms of our Lord.
Family of the Month - September 2020 - This month, the theme was a group of people with something in common. These men are known as the Council Golf League and Outing Leadership Team.
There are many hours of planning, organizing, calculating, prize-raising and just work that goes into our golf league and annual golf outing. These men donate a lot of their time to keep this tradition a fun and successful opportunity for each and every member of this council, our parish and local community to participate.
The results provide a large impact to local charities with the monetary donations from this council's efforts. The FOM is Golf League (Mike Goodhart - PGK, Tim Magers-not available for photo) and Golf Outing (Rick St. Peter - PGK, Jamie Bernacik - PGK). Congratulations, men!

Congratulations to our council's 2019-2020 Family of the Year, Bill and Mary Des Ormeau.
This award, like the Knight of the year, is the result of a year-long devotion of hard work, compassion and commitment of the Des Ormeau family. Bill first became a member of the Knights of Columbus in 1985. After a period of time, Bill was recruited and rejoined the Knights of Columbus at the Kern Council in 2014. Since that time, he has been an active member and participating in many events. His wife Mary has also participated in many of the events and contributed to support Bill with his responsibilities as Life Director.
Both Bill and Mary are very involved in the church through the various committees, functions and events at the parish. They are both Greeters before mass, work at the social Sunday receptions known as Café a'Becket and attend many of the Life events such as Respect Life Michigan dinner and the AAA Pregnancy Dinner. They also attend the faith fellowship group meetings and volunteer at the parish picnic.
Bill and Mary are involved in the surrounding community activities as volunteers and interfacing with the community via such events like MI Drive for People with Intellectual Disabilities (Tootsie Roll). They are also active in the parish community as volunteers during social events and organized faith programs.
The Des Ormeau family is chosen by this council as our Family of the Year nominee because of their strong stewardship of leading by example, their contribution to the parish, commitment to faith and support of this council and an active member/family.

We were finally able to resume our in-person council meetings in July. It was a very special evening to catch up on the individuals making great contributions to our council and the greater good. Starting with the following brothers achieving Honorary Life membership status.
The following members reached this status because they have completed 25+ years of membership and are 70+ years of age. Their many years of service and support have helped grow the order, support the church and benefit our community to help make it a better place.
Please join me in congratulating them!

Additionally, the June 2020 KOM was awarded to our Financial Secretary Mike Riley (right) for his persistent efforts during the member retention process and collection of outstanding dues. With our new DGK/Retention Director at the beginning of the year learning the new position and reconciling our member data base, Mike recognized the Retention Team needed some extra help. With Mike efforts and the COVID challenge, he helped the team secure dues from 35 members and only yield to a single member suspension.

The celebration continued during the meeting with the recognition of Knight of the Month for April 2020. DGK Ed Patrick (left) was awarded the KOM for championing the task of reconciling our council member data base and email distribution list. This was a very time-consuming effort that required him to reach out to each member of our council and verify/update their information. He worked closely with our FS, Mike Riley to update records with Supreme. There were only a few members that did not respond. Thanks to both men and everyone responding. As a result, our communication channel has been strengthened so we can reach more of our members.
Please join me in congratulating Ed!

We capped off the festive evening with the Knight of the Year presentation. This award is the result of a year long devotion of hard work, compassion and drive for the good of the order. PGK Mike Goodhart (left) has continued his passion of keeping this council focused and on task. His energy can be contagious and hopefully inspires others to accept the challenge and lead this council in some capacity.
Over the past year Mike has demonstrated admirable leadership during activities such as the Pumpkin Painting at Family Fun Day, running the Keeping Christ in Christmas poster contest, keeping our Facebook site current from events and publishing articles in the Chancellor.
He has tackled other efforts like coordinating a Pro-Life workshop with SJN featuring Mike Spencer, securing new MI Drive locations to maximize our fund-raising efforts and is the point person for clothing orders. Mike and Theresa were also a huge help with the council Christmas dinner.
He has been a huge help to me, especially during the time we were without a DGK. He continues to try and build our council as Membership Director. I am proud to honor Mike Goodhart as Msgr. Kern’s Knight of the Year for 2019-2020.

Here is a note we received from Shannon after the work was complete:
"Hello my name is Shannon Gholston and I have just received a ramp from your council. I have recently moved into a new home and spent over $2000 dollars trying to get my ramp built right. It was worked on twice by others and each time it was awful. I am a quadriplegic and I rely on that ramp everyday. I’m also on a fixed income and it would have taken me along time to save up the money to get it right. I thank you from the bottom of my heart for fixing my ramp and giving me my independence back. The Knights that came out to fix my ramp were extremely nice. Thanks again!"

All proceeds go to support the life saving efforts of AAA Pregnancy Resource Center in Livonia, MI. A very worthy cause indeed!

Thursday - April 16, 2015 - Msgr. Kern Council was well represented at this year's Respect Life Dinner sponsored by the Michigan Knights of Columbus. It was a great fund raising opportunity for Right to Life of Michigan and the keynote speaker, Pam Stenzel, was outstanding. Her message was that we need to do a much better job of explaining to our teenagers the real consequences of sex outside of marriage. It's not just abortion, but contracting potentially one or more of up to 30 STD's, possible infertility, and hugely damaged personal relationships. To get a better introduction to her message, watch this clip from a tv interview she did a couple years back. https://youtu.be/L1gBcrSK0E0

The Star Council Award is the highest distinction any council can realize. It takes into consideration membership and insurance growth as well as programming activities reported in each of the six program categories of our “Surge...with Service” program, e.g. Church Activities, Community Activities, Council Activities, Family Activities, Culture of Life Activities and Youth Activities. This is the second consecutive year our council has earned this prestigious award. Well done, men! Following is a note from GK Hans Hansen about this year's award.
Friday - July 4, 2014
I have been advised that our Council has earned the Star Council award for 2013 - 2014. Congratulations is extended to each member of the Council. To receive the award, the Council must achieve its membership objective, its insurance objective and conduct programming in specified areas.
The Columbian Award application (that we complete at the end of June) illustrates to Supreme our meeting the required programming and this cannot be done without the strong support of the membership and why congratulations is extended to you.
The achievement of the Membership and Insurance objectives is also the result of our programming. None of the people who joined our Council did so just to pay dues and attend meetings. They joined because they saw how we are active in our Parish and our Community and wished to be part of it and we welcome them! So while several people played specific roles in bringing the new members into the order or in adding insurance members, in addition to recognizing the Membership Director, the Field Agent and those who sponsored and mentored our new members, congratulations also goes to our members who participate in conducting our events.
Thanks to all of you for making the Star Council Award a reality!
Vivat Jesus
