Msgr. Kern Council Summer Golf League
Having Fun & Fraternity on the golf course for the past 21 years!
For the past 21 years, Msgr. Kern Council has sponsored a summer golf league for members and friends. We play 9 holes every Monday evening, early May through late August, enjoying a "10th Hole" of Fraternity after each week's round! PGK Jim Guth started our league in 2004 and chaired it thru 2011. PGK Andy Emmert chaired our league 2012-2014. For the years 2015-2018, we had tri-chairman: Mike Goodhart, George Peters and Ed Harkins. In 2019, our co-chairman were George Peters and Mike Goodhart. Starting 2020, our chairmen are Mike Goodhart and Tim Magers.
At the end of each season, any excess funds the league has generated during the year are donated to charity. AAA Pregnancy Resource Center is the current recipient of these funds and the money is used to support their services to pregnant mothers to be. Consider joining in the fun and supporting charity at the same time! We are open to all golfers of any skill level. To join our league when we hit the links again in Spring 2024, just contact Mike or Tim for more information or to sign up!

Summer Golf League News and Updates:
2024 K of C # 8284 Golf League
November 2024 - Wrapping up the Kern Council #8284 Summer Golf League for 2024, we recently presented a check to AAA Pregnancy Resource Center to help support the wonderful work they do. The total amount donated to AAA this year totals nearly $3,000! In addition, our golf league funding allowed us to hold a Pro Life Workshop in October at St. Thomas a'Becket Church in Canton. Bottomline, 2024 was another great year of playing golf and raising money for a great charitable cause! Thanks to all our golfers for making this happen! A huge "Thank You" also to Mike Goodhart for all of his work in making the golf league a continuing success and charitable endeavor!
Mike is looking forward to seeing everyone back again in April 2025 for more fun and fund raising on the course at Dowling Farms Golf Club in Northville. Keep an eye on your email starting in February as we plan ahead for next years's season!

Saturday - October 21, 2023 - This past week, Summer Golf League Chairman and Past Grand Knight Mike Goodhart, presented a check to AAA Pregnancy Resource Center for $3,896. This represented the amount of money accumulated during the course of this past summer's league play after expenses were all paid. Msgr Kern Council #8284 is proud to be able to share our profits from our summer golf league with AAA Pregnancy Resource Center in recognition of all the great work they do on behalf of women in need. Pictured below are Peggy Roberts, Director of AAA Pregnancy Resource Center, and PGK Mike Goodhart, Chairman of our Summer Golf League.
Sunday - October 2, 2022 - Check Presentation to AAA Pregnancy Resource Center - A sizable donation was recently made to AAA Pregnancy Resource Center by the two chairmen of our Summer Golf League, Mike Goodhart and Tim Magers. As is our usual practice, all the remaining money earned for our league play at the end of the season is donated to charity. This year's amount was $2,772. That's a lot of mulligans and 50/50 donations! Thanks to all our players this year and to our league chairman for another successful summer season of golf. 2022 was our 19th season! Next year our league will hit the big 2-0 - 20 years of golfing fun and charitable work!
Pictured below are L to R - Peggy Roberts, Director of AAA Pregnancy Resource Center, Past Grand Knight Mike Goodhart and co-chairman Tim Magers making the check presentation.

Wednesday - February 24, 2021 - Big news for our 2021 Summer Golf League season! We will be moving to a new course...actually this "new course" is not that new to us because we've golfed there several years in the past. Hickory Creek Golf Club on Ford Road (at Napier) will be our "new" venue for the 2021 season! Co-Chairman Mike Goodhart & Tim Magers expect to have another fun season of golf ready for us and already 36 full-time players have signed up to play. That's a new golf league record number of players for us! Stay tuned for more information on the upcoming season. No start day has been set yet, but it will likely be in late April or early May. Our season will again be 15 nights and Monday night tee times will start at 5:30 pm each week. We will be playing both the front and back nine at Hickory Creek each week. Check back here for more information coming soon.
2020 Summer Golf League Wrap Up - Our 17th season got off to a delayed start due to COVID and fortunately completed a 10-week season. The season wrapped up with a BBQ banquet hosted by Mike Goodhart in his backyard. Pictured below, from left to right, Dan Stechschulte (2nd Place), Mike Blazejewski (1st Place), Mike Goodhart (League Co- Chair) and John Spillson (Winner of 1st Annual Toilet Bowl Award). Not pictured is Tim Majors (League Co-Chair) and Bob Yancey (3rd Place).
Many of the players attended the festivities, including special guest Nancy Austin representing the AAA Pregnancy Center in Livonia. Because of the generosity of the players through green fees, raffles, mulligans and straight out donations, the council provided Nancy with a check for $1,792.00 for the Center. Congratulations to the winners and all the players! Your contributions to saving a life was very appreciated by Center Director Peggie Roberts when PGK Mike Goodhart and Grand Knight Larry Guastella delivered the check.

Wednesday - June 17, 2020 - Our 2020 Summer Golf League finally got off to a great start this past Monday, June 15th, after a several week delay due to the coronavirus and its impact on nearly every aspect of our lives...including playing golf! We have 30 golfers this year and the weather on Day 1 couldn't have been much better with temps in the low to mid 70's and dry conditions on the course. This year's season will be shortened to 10 weeks due to our late start, but that will still offer plenty of opportunity for all our golfers to have another fun season!
Wednesday - February 12, 2020 - Returning golfers - Watch your email Inbox for an email from PGK Mike Goodhart asking you to confirm your interest in continuing to play golf when our 2020 golf league season begins! Respond to Mike promptly, please. New golfers - feel free to contact Mike here (click on his name) and let him know you would like to play this year. We're looking forward to another fun summer golf league season...our 17th!
Tuesday - August 27, 2019 - Last night, our council Summer golf league wrapped up its 16th season with our final night of golf and a banquet and award presentation afterward. Thanks to all our regulars and subs for providing another season of fun golf and fraternity! Our top three scorers this season were Bob Yancey (36.71 average weekly score), Tim Magers (37.14 average score) and Rick Stepien (37.43 average score).
In addition to golfing fun, we once again earned money for charity and will be making another donation to St. Vincent Depaul Society. Everyone participating in our golf league makes that happen. Thanks so much for your generosity in buying mulligans and playing 50/50 each week!
Pictured below are left to right: PGK Mike Goodhart, league co-chairman; Tim Magers; George Peters, league co-chairman; and Bob Yancey. Rick Stepien was not available for the photo.

Friday - August 16, 2019 - It's been another fun time on the golf course for our 2019 golf league and our 32 players. Hard to believe, but only two Monday night's remain in our summer season! On Monday August 26th, we will wrap up the season with our last night of golf and our annual banquet after golf in the clubhouse. Our best scorers for the season will also be recognized that night. This is always a fun way to wrap up the season, so if you're a regular or a sub playing that night, plan on sticking around for the food and awards in the clubhouse!
Sunday - March 31, 2019 - We still have a couple of openings for golfers in our 2019 summer golf league. Interested? See the article below for more information and who to contact. League pay this year starts on April 29th!
Tuesday - September 11, 2018 - We wrapped up our 15th annual summer golf league last night with some good golf and a very nice post golf banquet in the clubhouse at Fellows Creek Golf Club in Canton. Congratulations to our three top scoring golfers for the year: Rick Stepien, David Trost and Robert Craighead. We'll be starting up again next year on April 29, 2019!
Thursday - August 16, 2018 - A message from the golf league committee...
Men - We put a lot of pressure on our subs this week with 10 regulars unable to play. We did have 5 subs come through, but the 5 remaining vacancies were unfilled and those players unfortunately had to take the "absent player" score of your weekly average plus 3 strokes. Sorry about that guys, but that's just the way we've set the league up. The large number of vacancies in the schedule then required some quick adjustments at tee time to balance things out. The league committee appreciates everyone's understanding when this happens, which isn't very often, thank goodness. But in the immortal words of Forrest Gump, "shit happens". Remember first and foremost, we're out to have fun golfing on Monday nights, despite some inconveniences that pop up once in awhile.
A big "thank you" to those who could sub this past week - Sam Schafer, Ron Gering, Duke Hynek, Steve Wieczorck and Chico Rodriguez!
Very nice scores of 34 were turned in by the pairings of Bob Scherle & Ron Gering and Kevin O'Keefe & Greg Jacobs. Mike Goodhart & Steve Wieczorck also scored an excellent 35. Good shooting, men!
Sam Schafer won our 50/50 drawing in the clubhouse after golf.
Next week (August 20th) we play the West & East Courses. Ed Harkins will be doing the check-in's. Pairings are below.
Rest of the season... We golf on August 20th and 27th. Then we take Labor Day 9/3 off.
September 10th will be our last night of golf this season and that's when we will do our year-end dinner and wrap-up in the clubhouse after golf. We'll have a catered buffet dinner then like usual too, so be sure to plan on golfing and be there for that! Any player present golfing that night is invited to the dinner, even if you're a sub playing that night. Mark your calendars!
You can also find schedules and information about our league at our K of C Council website. https://www.kofc8284.org/summer-golf-league.html
Remember also that you can connect with our subs if you need to by hitting "Reply All" to this email. All our regular subs are included as cc's.
Any questions or comments, let me or any member of the golf committee know.

Thursday - August 16, 2018 - Our latest schedule update:
Saturday - July 28, 2018 - The golf committee has had some conversations about our rainout's this season and our going forward scheduling. We don't want to extend the season too far into September or beyond, so we'll be sticking with our "make up" dates of August 27th (5/14 rainout) and September 10th (5/21 rainout), but we will be going with "rain checks" for our July 16th rainout. Be sure to check the revised scheduled attached to this email for how things will play out for us the rest of the season. There will be no golf on Labor Day, Monday September 3rd.
Right now we are planning on September 10th as our end of the season and that's when we will do our year-end dinner and wrap-up in the clubhouse after golf. We'll have a catered buffet dinner then like usual too, so be sure to plan on golfing and being there for that!
NOTE: Fellows Creek likes to do a golf league appreciation night every year. You might remember last year where they fed us all a pasta dinner after golf. It was actually not bad food, especially for the price (no charge)! This year's appreciation night for us will be this coming week, Monday July 30th! They haven't told us what the menu is yet, but it will be a decent free dinner I'm sure. So if you're golfing this coming Monday, stick around for our post golf fraternity and the free appreciation dinner courtesy of Fellows Creek! Drinks will be be on us, again just like last year.

Wednesday - July 18, 2018 - We've completed 8 weeks of our 15 week schedule so far. Since we started the season on April 30th, we have golfed 7 times and "not golfed" 5 times. Three rain outs and 2 holidays are responsible for us missing 5 weeks so far. Hopefully we have a "dry" rest of the season! Here's our latest schedule update...
Tuesday - June 4, 2018 - We re-started the season tonight after two rainouts and a break last week for Memorial Day and it felt great to be back out on the golf course! One of our highlights of the evening was provided by Ed Kubicki. On the Par 5 Hole #4 on the South Course, Ed chipped in from the sand trap in front of the green for a nice birdie (it's rare to birdie this hole!). Below is a picture of Ed pulling his ball from the cup! Congrats on a great shot, Ed!
Monday - May 21, 2018 - Dang! We were rained out again this week! Our league historians cannot remember us ever being rained out two weeks in a row before! With Memorial Day coming up next Monday, we won't be golfing again until June 4th. Let's hope the weather will finally cooperate and let us get our golf in that evening. The May 21st schedule will be added to the end of our schedule and we will play it on September 10th. See you all in two weeks!
Thursday - May 17, 2018 - Well, we experienced our first "rain out" in over a year this week when the Fellows Creek courses were just too wet to play after the creek flooded over the weekend from all the rain. We will be back on the links this coming Monday, May 21st, to play our 3rd week of the season. Our "rain out" week has been tacked onto the backend of our schedule and we will play it on August 27th.
Tuesday - May 1, 2018 - Our 32 golfers started our 15 week council Summer Golf League season last night under ideal weather conditions. Brother John Spencer brought “the book” just in case anybody needed a refresher (below left). Grand Knight Mike Goodhart got us going with a ceremonial opening drive (below right). Mike’s drive was so explosive it literally only left a particle trail behind! We’re all looking forward to Week #2 next Monday!
Friday - April 27, 2018 - Our 2018 summer golf league season starts this coming Monday! We have a full group of 32 players again this year. Below is our schedule for the season. Here's to another fun season for all our golfers!
Monday - March 26, 2018 - As we approach our 2018 golf league season that starts 5 weeks from today, here's something to think about. On second thought, maybe too much thinking in golf is not a good thing!

With two weeks left in the season I wanted to update everyone on a few things:
- I will be getting all our golfers rain checks for the rain out on 8/11.
- As in the past, the league will provide a dinner after the last week of golf (9/8/2014). Dinner will likely be pizza, salad, breadsticks, pasta. Drinks are not provided.

Sunday - July 20, 2014 - We are now eight weeks into our Summer Golf League season. As of July 14th, our top three golfers by average weekly score are pretty much the same as a month ago - Mike West (35.25), Lou Martiniano (38.13) and Robert Craighead (38.13). We haven’t had a rain out since May so we’ve been doing well on the weather front also!
Saturday June 28, 2014 - Believe it or not, we are approaching the half way mark this coming week in our summer golf league. At this point, our top four golfers by average score are Mike West all alone in first place (36.0), followed by Lou Martiniano, Bob Craighead and Dave Nowicki all tied for second (38.75). It’s been a fun season so far and we’re looking forward to lots of good golf left on our remaining Monday nights!
Monday - May 19, 2014 - Our Council 2014 Golf League got off to a good start tonight after being rained out last week. The weather was great, the course was in good shape and the "19th Hole" fraternity was enjoyable as always!
Sunday - May 18th, 2014 - Update from Andy Emmert...new 2014 golf schedule.
With the rain out last week I took the opportunity to rearrange the schedule to make play time on the front nine and back nine more even for all players. I also added a week onto the end of the season as the make up for last week.
Please destroy the schedule previously distributed and use the one below.

Update from Andy Emmert 4/6/2014 about the upcoming golf season:
Ok Guys,
Here are the specifics:
Now for the important part: Please drop off your check to the St. Thomas a' Becket Parish office and put it in the K of C mail box. Make check payable to KNGHTS OF COLUMBUS COUNCIL #8284. I will need your check by April 25th to secure your spot in this years league.
Please Note: We have at least two spots open right now (likely more) so if you know of someone who might be interested, please pass on the above information to them and have them contact me.

Ok Guys,
Here are the specifics:
- Season will start May 12 and go through August 25th. No Golf Memorial Day. That is 15 weeks total.
- Cost is the same as last year - $270 for the season. If you want a cart, it will be $7.00 extra paid to the course each week.
- We are still golfing at Hickory Creek.
- We will tee off both the front and the back nine starting at 5:37. I didn't have overwhelming support for a format change so I kept it as is.
- I will finalize schedule over the next few weeks once I nail down the entire roster.
